Meet Thotso, Your Thought Maker

by Rachel Robb Avery, Ph.D. (Author), Nancy "Fern" Bennett Phillips (Editor), Rebecca Davie Hazen (Illustrator)

Michelle is excited about this new book: “Meet Thotso, Your Thought Maker is a new book I really, really like for 3-8 year olds (from preschoolers to early elementary school). I rarely see a book I like so much as a teaching tool to use directly with kids. It pairs beautifully with our work. A note about the price: Thotso is a thick board book that has many interactive parts. The student can flip things up, pull things down, etc., to explore what thoughts are hiding under pictures. All this makes it very engaging in a hands-on way with our little guys and gals, which is why it is about $30."

Meet Thotso, Your Thought Maker is an interactive board book that teaches young children about the thoughts they make. The book uses simple language to help children label three types of thoughts: Smiling Thots, or thoughts that feel good, BooBoo Thots, or thoughts that do not feel good and Bandage Thots, or kind words they can say to themselves when the BooBoo Thots come. Children learn that when they pay attention to the thoughts they make, they can choose to make thoughts that help them to do and feel better. Meet Thotso, Your Thought Maker, by giving children a language to speak about the types of thoughts they make or have, helps them to understand themselves better and to more effectively share these thoughts with their parents, educators and caregivers.

In the language of social thinking, Smiling Thots, that is thoughts that feel good are equivalent  to "good thoughts" and BooBoo Thots, are similar to "uncomfortable thoughts". Bandage Thots refer to the thinking strategy that helps a child move from the distress associated with an uncomfortable thought to the relief that returns with a good thought. Given that young children know all about booboos and bandages, the Bandage Thot thinking strategy is quickly understood and easily assimilated into a child's everyday life.
