Social Thinking Center

Innovative, Practical Treatment of High-Functioning Autism, Asperger Syndrome, NLD, ADHD and Other Diagnosed and Undiagnosed Social-Cognitive Challenges

The Social Thinking Center is primarily a training clinic, where professionals learn techniques to use in their settings through internship and mentor programs. As a result, the clinic has a very limited number of openings for clients. Most Social Thinking clinical services are provided now by the non-profit clinic, Teach Social  Silicon Valley.

The groups run by Michelle Garcia Winner, Pamela Crooke and Stephanie Madrigal at the Center will be observed at times by professionals who come from all over the world to study our techniques and at times participate in treatment sessions. Confidential information about your child will not be shared with them beyond what the professional who may be interning with us needs to know to plan an effective lesson. At all times when a professional works at our clinic they will  be accompanied by the group's lead clinician (Michelle, Stephanie or Pam) and all planning will be implemented only after it is approved by the lead clinician. All clients applying for services from the Social Thinking Center must understand and agree to the training component at the clinic. The preference is given to the older child and our therapists also treat adults, as there are few services available for these individuals.

If you are interested in applying for services, please read the About the Center page in the left menu and the documents below. Then, fill in and return the appropriate documents. For questions, please call 408.557.8595.

More on Social Thinking Clinical Services

Social Thinking, founded by Michelle Garcia Winner, is dedicated to developing and practicing innovative assessment and treatment approaches for assisting individuals with social-cognitive challenges, including students and adults with high-functioning autism, Asperger Syndrome, nonverbal learning disability and related diagnosed and undiagnosed communicative difficulties. Michelle directs the Social Thinking Center, its clinicians, the development and professional instruction of practical treatment methods that can be used in schools, homes and therapy rooms.

Teach Social - Silicon Valley

In September 2008, Michelle's Center for Social Thinking became a non-profit organization, Teach Social - Silicon Valley. An exciting development for local families and adults, Teach Social provides therapy services and its non-profit status will allow it to raise funds to help cover the costs of scholarships and secure donations from people and organizations to assist school districts and help to establish more adult clinical service programs.

Intern and Mentor Programs

Michelle directs the intern and mentor program, where educators, therapists, speech-language pathologists and other caregivers from around the country (and the world!) receive intensive training in proven ways to implement treatment in their schools, private practices, homes and other settings.

Please look at individuals who have completed the mentor training program available in your community and, if you have already studied Social Thinking or attended Michelle's workshops, you might consider participating in professional training at Social Thinking.

Social Thinking Providers Conference

As the number of professionals around the country and the world practicing Social Thinking has grown, we had to find a way to capture all this energy and expertise. Now, every year, we have a Social Thinking Providers Conference - three days in early summer where professionals are invited to present and share their ideas and successful practices!

More on Michelle

In 2008, Michelle received a Congressional award for her development of Social Thinking. The Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders has also published research supporting her methodologies for the treatment of high-functioning autism and Asperger syndrome. Michelle travels the world speaking to parents and professionals this treatment approach that has assisted individuals with autism spectrum disorders (particularly higher-functioning autism, Asperger's, NLD and similar) and she receives praise for her educational, energetic and innovative workshop presentations. She serves on the Panel of Professional Advisers of the Autism Society of America and has written numerous books on this broad topic.
