Michelle was recently interviewed by GreatSchools, a nonprofit organization focused on school performance, for an article on the Massachusetts law requiring that IEP teams consider and address the social skills needs of children on the spectrum. Click here to read the article.

These workshops offer in-depth, practical strategies for addressing higher-functioning students' social-cognitive problems and related academic issues, including written expression, reading comprehension and organization. We will explore how to write IEP goals that can lead to (often slow) improvements in social responsiveness and models to both assess and address specific deficits in the ability to accommodate the perspectives of others, a skill crucial to all interpersonal relationships. All registrations are processed first-come, first-served so please register soon if you'd like to attend these workshops.

Portland OR Workshops Nov 9-10 2010

circle_guysAdolescents and young adults with Asperger's, ADHD, high-functioning autism, NLD and similar need realistic transition strategies

Michelle Garcia Winner will present new workshops in Portland on this topic: how to develop transition plans, social-emotional problem-solving skills, "I Can Do It" mindsets and many more practical strategies.

We will explore the specific adult problem-solving skills needed to truly function beyond classroom and home structures and meet the expectations of the workplace and the wider community.

The workshops specifically address the needs of individuals with social and communication challenges, including diagnoses such as Asperger's, ADHD, high-functioning autism spectrum disorders and similar, as they prepare for - or need to confront - the transition to adult responsibilities and expectations. Specific, practical strategies examine realistic transition plans, "Social-Emotional Chain Effects," and how to develop an "I Can Do It" mindset.
